Help raise awareness of lung cancer screening and its benefits

The Northern Cancer Alliance is looking for people whose cancer was found through lung cancer screening to help raise awareness of the programme and encourage others to say ‘yes’ when invited to attend.

Lung cancer screening helps find lung cancer early, often before symptoms appear. Finding lung cancer early can lead to better treatment options and, in some cases, can save lives.

We would like to hear from people who would be happy to share their story to show the real-life benefits of lung cancer screening as part of our awareness-raising campaign.

How you could help

We are asking people who are comfortable doing so to:

• allow us to use your photo in a poster promoting lung cancer screening
• record a short video about your experiences and why you are pleased you took part

What would be involved?

For the posters, we would like to use photos that show people doing things that are important to you. This might include:

• spending time with family, friends or pets
• celebrating special occasions
• doing things you love, like holiday, hobbies, holidays or going to the match

We may be able to use photos that you already have, so we may not need to take any new pictures.

For the short videos, we want you to tell us, in your own words, what your experience was like and why you are pleased you took part in screening. This could be recorded on a phone.

Where would the photos and videos be used?

Your photo or video could be used on our website and social media channels as part of a campaign to raise awareness of lung cancer screening and its benefits. This will be in partnership with national charity the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Why your story matters

Hearing from people who have benefited from lung cancer screening can help others feel more confident about saying ‘yes’ when they’re invited. By sharing real stories, we hope more people will take part in screening and more lives will be saved across the North East and North Cumbria.

The lung cancer screening programme invites people aged 55-74 years who smoke or used to smoke for a lung health check. People who are identified as higher risk are offered a scan of their lungs. This finds lung cancer early.
