Genomic medicine uses the information in our DNA to inform and personalise medicine, which can help improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention options for a wide range of conditions.

The NHS 10 Year Plan emphasises the integration of genomics into cancer care, aiming to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

We collaborate closely with the NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) to integrate genomic testing into cancer care pathways across the North East and North Cumbria. This developing partnership aims to ensure equitable access to cutting-edge genomic diagnostics for all cancer patients, supporting earlier and more accurate diagnoses and enabling personalised treatment plans based on individual genetic profiles.

We work with the regional GMS Alliance to engage stakeholders, align clinical protocols, and embed genomic testing within routine cancer services. This will include where relevant supporting workforce education and transformation programmes so clinicians can confidently utilise genomics, as well as contributing to the implementation of the National Genomic Test Directory.

By combining expertise in cancer care with genomic innovation, the collaboration will help reduce variation in outcomes, improve survival rates, and deliver more targeted therapies for patients across the region.
