Learning Disabilities
People and Communities
People with a learning disability encounter multiple, overlapping barriers in cancer care that lead to poorer outcomes compared to the general population. These challenges occur across the entire cancer pathway.
This includes:
- Lower uptake of screening programmes.
- Higher risk of late-stage diagnosis.
- Challenges in communication and reasonable adjustments during treatment
The North East and North Cumbria Learning Disability Network works closely with the Northern Cancer Alliance and local providers to make cancer services more inclusive and accessible. They involve experts by experience to co-design resources and pathways.
Key Initiatives
